In early 2008 (and on other, prior occasions), several legislators from drought-stricken Georgia alleged that an 1818 surveyor's error had placed the Georgia-Tennessee border 1.71 km (5,600 ft) south of where Congress had intended — an added distance which would allow Georgia access to the Tennessee River.
